ANFO is a commonly used and cost effective dry hole explosive. ANFO is a free flowing blend of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate and 6% fuel oil by weight. ANFO is suitable for use in most dry hole blasting applications.

ANFO is manufactured in Synegex Mobile Processing units and augered into blast holes. Generally ANFO has an augered density in the range of 0.80 to 0.85 g/cm3. The bulk density of ANFO depends on the density of the Ammonium Nitrate prills. ANFO readily absorbs moisture and deteriorates on contact with water hence it has no water resistance making it suitable for dry conditions only. Synegex uses high quality locally manufactured porous prilled Ammonium Nitrate for ANFO manufacture.

ANFO is delivered into the blast hole by being augered from the MPU. ANFO should not be used in ground containing pyritic or other reactive material. Incorrect use of this product may result in high levels of post blast fume.
In holes with a diameter equal or less than 127mm the minimum primer required is a 150gm cast booster. In holes with a diameter greater than 127mm the minimum primer required is a 400gm cast booster. It is recommended that an additional cast booster be used every 15 metres of column charge to reduce the risks associated with explosive column disruption.
ANFO is only available in bulk, delivered through bulk MPU delivery systems.

All explosives are classified as Dangerous Goods and must be transported in accordance with relevant State and Commonwealth regulations. ANFO cannot be transported on a public road in the MPU. ANFO is batch manufactured when loaded into the MPU from non-explosive ingredients.
